* Reduce Veteran Suicides by supporting the utilization of evidence – based alternative therapy programs; Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) has been proven to heal Brain Wounds (e.g. Post Traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and many other conditions

Support Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Pilot Programs, future legislation, and funding for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). HBOT shows significant promise in suicide prevention, particularly for veterans with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), by delivering concentrated oxygen to heal brain wounds, reduce inflammation, and improve neuroplasticity leading to decreased suicidal ideations, anxiety, and depression. HBOT post-treatment studies show a vital, drug-free pathway to recovery when standard treatments have failed.

Currently, thirteen states (AZ, OK, TN, TX, VA, WY, MO, ND, NC, KY, FL, IN, and MD) have enacted HBOT treatment legislation. Eight additional states (MI, IA, OH, PA, OR, NY, NJ, KS) are in the process of drafting or introducing future HBOT legislation. We are requesting our Michigan legislature to support and fund current legislation HB 5456 and HB 5457, introduced on January 15, 2026, for a Veteran HBOT pilot program here in Michigan.

State of Michigan HBOT Legislation is:
House Bill # 5456 - Hyperbaric oxygen treatment pilot program. Representative Kathy Schmaltz
House Bill # 5457 - Hyperbaric oxygen therapy pilot program, Appropriations funding request. Representative Kathy Schmaltz

Federal HBOT Legislation is:
House Bill # 72 - TBI and PTSD Treatment Act. Congressman Andrew Biggs, AZ
House Bill # 1336 - Veterans National Traumatic Brain Injury Treatment Act. Congressman Greg Murphy, NC
Senate Bill # 862 - HBOT Access Act of 2025. Senator Tommy Tubberville, AL
Senate Bill #2737 - Veterans National Traumatic Brain Injury Treatment Act. Senator Tommy Tubberville, AL

The “signature wounds” of Iraq and Afghanistan are TBI and PTSD, affecting an estimated 877,450 Veterans.

Additionally, more Veterans have died from Diabetic Foot Ulcers and Lower Limb Amputations (LLA) in the past 20 years (796,340) than all the Service Members killed in action in all the U.S. Wars (623,982) since the start of World War I. The current LLA Veteran mortality rate is 64-71% within 3 years post-LLA surgery.

* = This priority requires both State and Federal action.
